Every wonder, “Is my forgetfulness part of normal aging or is it more?” Johnsie Douglas, MEd, LPC, with Right at Home will be on hand to administer the Saint Louis University Mental Status Exam (SLUMS), a widely used and brief oral/written screening tool only, given to assist in determining a dementia diagnosis or provide a baseline of cognitive levels for your doctor. January 22 – Noon – 1:30 pm, LUNCH ‘N LEARN SERIES: Developing an Attitude of Gratitude
If there was a pill no side effects that helped you eat healthier, exercise more, experience less depression and sleep better, would you take it? It is not in pill form, but gratitude may be as important to your health and happiness as nutrition or any of the other wellness imperatives. We will discuss how important developing an attitude of gratitude is to master the art of aging well. After all, the real purpose of growing older is to make the world a better place. What does chronic inflammation do to the body? How can I reduce the risk of chronic inflammation? Join Robert J. Wolff, Ph.D., Professor of Science and Health Science for an in depth discussion on inflammation, ways to reduce it, and tips on managing arthritis.
Art of Coping with Loss – Will meets the fourth Thursday from 6:30 – 8 pm
Dr. Delores Gulledge will teach us to use art as medicine when dealing with loss and grief. No experience required.
Caregiver Support Groups (FREE RESPITE services provided with these groups.)
You are not alone. Connecting with other caregivers, sharing, venting, learning from each other and our facilitators help you gain an understanding that you are not alone. Each of our groups below meet twice a month.
Evening group meets the first and third Tuesday of the month from 6pm – 7:15pm
Daytime group meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 1pm – 2:15pm
Caregiver Support Group for Early Stages of Dementia – Meets first and third Tuesday from 11:30am – 1pm.
This is a group for caregivers and families adjusting to a new diagnosis of some form of dementia. It focuses on what you need to know, plan and do in order to live the best life possible in the midst of this chronic illness.
Grief Support Group – Meets the second and fourth Monday from 1 – 2pm
Connect with others who have experienced loss and challenges that living with grief brings.
Multiple Sclerosis & Family Support Group – Meets the third Monday from 1 – 2 pm
This is an uplifting group for those living with multiple sclerosis and for their family members.
Parkinson’s Caregiver Support Group – Meets the second and fourth Tues. from 11:30 am – 1 pm (free respite services provided)
This is a group for caregivers who are caring for someone with Parkinson’s Disease.
Wellness and Energy Programs
Beginner Line Dancing – Meets the first and third Tuesday from 1:30 – 2:30pm
Have fun and relieve stress by learning basic line dancing routines. No experience needed.
Coffee & Canvas – Meets every Thursday from 10 – 11:30 am
Join on Thursdays for social time filled with smiles, crafts and friendship. Refreshments provided.
Girl, you’ve got this. – Meets the fourth Tuesday from 6:30 – 8 pm
This women’s group explores the spiritual journey through teachings, meditation, drumming, yoga, chakras, mindfulness, journaling, and other creative methods.
Men’s Coffee Club – Meets the second and fourth Friday of the month at 9:30am
Connect with other caregivers who have walked the caregiving path over coffee and breakfast.
SharpFit Brains – Meets the fourth Tuesday from 1:30 – 2:30 pm
Your brain has the incredible ability to reshape itself, to adapt and change If you are willing to stretch it for as little as 10 minutes a day. Senior Expert Marsha Clayman will teach everything needed to know about maintaining our brain.
Yoga with Nicole– Meets January 6 2:30 – 3:30 pm and January 21 from 1:30 – 2:30pm
Grab a mat or chair and join certified yoga instructor Nicole Styron to learn how the mindful practice of yoga can help you relieve stress as it strengthens your muscles and improves your flexibility and balance.
Beginner Tai Chi – Meets the first and third Friday from 11 am – Noon
Join Gaylee Davis for a low impact, slow-motion exercise that helps you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention on your bodily sensations. Tai Chi is a great way to improve balance and stability.
Drumming Circle of FUN. – Meets the third Thursday from 11 am – noon
Cyndi Boot will lead the circle of drumming and experience its calming and energizing effects. Group drumming has been shown to reduce stress, and enhance the immune system.
