The Chapin Town Council made a property tax millage rate adjustment for the Tax Year but it will have a very small impact on taxpayers.
The adjustment, adopted unanimously at the Aug. 4 council meeting, will increase taxes 75 cents per $100,000. If a resident’s property is valued at $100,000 the amount due is $51.53 and with the proposed adjustment the amount would be $52.28. Such adjustments are made annually by local governments to comply with changing property values.
In other action the council approved on second reading an amendment to an ordinance that will allow exceptions to restrictions on games of chance. The amendment will allow bingo games to be held at the American Legion Building in Chapin.
The council also approved an ordinance providing for electronic meetings during a “state of emergency.” Chapin and many other municipalities are now holding electronic, or “virtual” meetings, as a protection against the spread of the coronavirus. Participants communicate via computer so they don’t have to gather together in a meeting room.
The council also approved on second reading an ordinance adding a new Rural Residential Zoning District to the town’s ordinances, a measure designed to improve residential development in rural areas.
