Chapin High School student accepted to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy

Chapin High School senior Kate Stebbins has been appointed to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London Connecticut and plans to major in Civil Engineering in hopes of becoming a search and rescue helicopter pilot.

“I am very thankful for the opportunity I have been given to serve my country in such a unique way,” Stebbins said. “My participation in Chapin High School’s Academic Leadership Academy (ALA) helped lay the academic groundwork I needed for my studies at the United States Coast Guard Academy. I want to thank my ALA teachers for pushing me, bettering me and preparing me for my rigorous academic future”

Stebbins will also run collegiate track and cross country while at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

“Our Eagle Family is incredibly proud of Kate and her accomplishments,” said Chapin High School Principal Michael Ames. “Not only is she an incredible student-athlete, but she is also an even better person, and our country will be stronger because of her service.”

Unlike the other federal service academies, a congressional nomination is not required or considered for admission to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, but acceptance is highly competitive and based on merit.  The acceptance rate at the school is around 14%.
