Lexington-Richland School District Five Community Support Services Coordinator Julius Scott has been selected as a member of the third class of the South Carolina Afterschool Leaders Empowered (SCALE) Fellowship.
Each year, SCALE convenes a diverse cohort of 20 emerging summer and afterschool learning leaders, providing them with the tools and frameworks they need to build strong partnerships, secure funding, design and scale evidenced-based programming, and more. The program is grounded in deep discussion and experiential learning and led by a diverse faculty with afterschool and summer learning expertise.
“I am both grateful and honored for the opportunity to serve as a SCALE Fellow,” Scott said. “The Office of Community Support Services was created and designed with increasing after school and summer programming access to students living in high-risk communities within our district. We want to be known for the work we do in our community. We want the community to see evidence of our beliefs in action. This fellowship will provide me with invaluable skills and strategies to strengthen out of school time programming that will benefit students throughout School District Five and beyond.”
Beginning in January 2024, fellows will participate in a 10-month process that will bring a mix of virtual and in-person gatherings. It begins with a welcome webinar in January, followed by an intensive in-person experience January 28-Februrary 1, 2024. This in-depth, all expenses paid week will create a cohort of entrepreneurial, networked leaders capable of strengthening afterschool and expanded learning opportunities across the state. Beginning in February, Fellows will participate in monthly webinars and conduct a leadership project in their home community.

The Riley Institute at Furman and the South Carolina Department of Education have partnered to offer the SCALE Fellowship program.
