District Five students shine in MathCounts Competition

Several Lexington-Richland School District Five students earned awards in the State MathCounts competition March 4, 2023 at Chapin Middle School. Eighty-five students competed as individuals representing 30 schools and 11 teams, from across the state participating.

These teams competed in local competition in five areas around the state. Teams advanced to State by winning the local chapter, or all 4 of their team members were in the top 25% of students in the state that participated in the chapter competitions. Chapin Middle School and Dutch Fork Middle school both had individuals advance to State by being in the top 25% of those who took the chapter test.

Chapin Middle School’s team advanced the following students to State: Seomgeun “Miguel” Shim (Team), Luke Simon (Team), Annie Xu (Team), Claire Ju (Team), Anthony Fu (Individual), and Ruhao Shen (Individual).

Dutch Fork Middle School advanced the following students to State: William Wang (Individual), Michael Wang (Individual), Ayden Robinson (Individual), Mustafa Azhar (Individual), Maddox Nie (Individual)

All of these Mathletes were winners before they came to Chapin for State, because they had to win their local competition before advancing to the state level.

At State, Chapin Middle School Team placed 2nd.

Individual Ranking for School District Five were as follows:

· 8th – Luke Simon
· 9th – William Wang
· 13th – Annie Xu
· 16th – Ayden Robinson
· 17th – Michael Wang
The top 16 students advanced to the State CountDown Round from School District Five were:
· 2nd – Luke Simon
· 3rd – Seomgeun “Miguel” Shim
· 4th – William Wang

The top four individual winners create the State team and will represent South Carolina at the National competition in Orlando, FL, May 12-16, 2023. Seomgeun “Miguel” Shim, will represent SC again this year on the State team at National MathCounts.

School District Five would also like to give appreciation and congratulations to the following MathCounts Coaches in the district: Sheri Ross (Chapin Middle) and Laura Atkinson (Dutch Fork Middle) and high school students Andy Yang, William Yang and Leo Sun (Dutch Fork High School).

MathCounts is a nonprofit organization that strives to engage middle school students of all ability and interest levels in fun, challenging math programs to expand their academic and professional opportunities. Middle school students exist at a critical juncture in which their love for mathematics must be nurtured, or their fear of mathematics must be overcome.
