School District Five health science teacher, Karen Edwards, has been selected as the 2019 South Carolina Health Science Outstanding Teacher of the Year by South Carolina Health Educators, a division of the South Carolina Association of Career and Technical Education.
The award is given annually to recognize teachers that are providing outstanding career and technical education programs for youth in the health science field. Recipients of this award must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and novel programs that are serving to improve and promote Health Science – career and technical education. Edwards received the award November 4 while attending the SC Health Science Education Professional Development Conference.
“It was a huge surprise to win,” Edwards said. “It is because of the amazing students and supportive administration at Spring Hill High School Career Pathways Magnet that I won. I am delighted to represent School District Five for this state award.”
Edwards has been teaching health science for seven years, the last five years have been at Spring Hill High School. She earned her bachelor’s of science degree in athletic training at the University of South Carolina.
Edwards is a state and national board-certified athletic trainer. This year, she was voted President-Elect for the SC Health Science Educators Executive Committee for the 20-21 year.
“I am proud of Mrs. Edwards for being recognized at the South Carolina Health Science conference,” said Dr. Michael Lofton, Spring Hill High School principal. “I am excited that her connections and networking will bring further opportunities for our students at Spring Hill.”
