Gator Bands receive highest possible rating

River Bluff High School Concert Band under the direction of Mr. Ted Tinker and Wind Symphony under the direction of Mr. Kevin Hebert performed at the SC Band Directors Association Concert Performance Assessment on March 15th at the Lexington One Performing Arts Center.

Bands perform in one of 6 categories based upon the difficulty of music (1 easy – 6 advanced). The Concert Band performed in class 3, while the Wind Symphony performed in class 6. Each band performed a concert consisting of 3 pieces of music on stage for a panel of judges who evaluated them in the areas of Tone, Intonation, Technique, Balance, Interpretation, and Musical Effect.

Both bands received a superior rating (the highest rating possible) from all three judges. After performing on stage, each band visited the sightreading room to evaluate their music-reading skills. In this room, the students and directors were given 6 minutes to study a piece of music that they had never seen before without playing a note. After six minutes of study time, the band performed the music to the best of their ability while two judges listened and evaluated their performance. Both bands also received a superior rating from both judges in the sightreading room.

Both bands received the highest rating possible, “Superior with Distinction.”
