Irmo’s varsity basketball teams will visit Dutch Fork Thursday for the first of two scheduled games this season between these two District Five competitors.
The Yellow Jacket boys team (6-1) is currently riding a five-game winning streak after its 72-33 win against River Bluff on Tuesday. The Silver Fox boys are at 3-6 after a 51-47 loss to A. C. Flora (ACF) Tuesday.
On the girls’ side, Irmo goes into the game 1-6 after taking a 33-25 loss to River Bluff, and Dutch Fork is at 6-2 after its 51-46 victory over the ACF Falcons on Tuesday.
Dylan Williams, who recently reached the 1000 mark in career points at Irmo, continues to lead the Irmo boys team in scoring with 15 points and six rebounds against River Bluff Tuesday, while Devin Binyard had 13 points and seven rebounds, Teandre Summons had 12 points and seven rebounds, Javian Green scored 11 points, and Juice Kiett recorded six points and 10 assists.
In the game against River Bluff early this week, the Irmo girls led 20-19 going into the fourth quarter, but then the Gators outscored the Yellow Jackets 14-5 to take the win.
Senior Alani Martinez scored 10 points to lead the girls’ team.
In the Dutch Fork girls’ win against A. C. Flora, junior Hillary Offing and sophomore Kayce Hyman each scored 14 points and hauled in seven rebounds to lead the team, and Antoinet Cheeseboro recorded seven assists to lead the Foxes in that category.
Dutch Fork’s boys led Flora 27-25 at the half, but the Falcons pulled away in the third quarter and maintained the lead to win the game.
With the Winter Break starting next week, Monday, the Irmo basketball teams will squeeze in one more District Five rival game before then.
Chapin’s Eagles will visit Irmo Saturday to round out the 2021 portion of the regular schedule. The girls start at 6 pm, and the boys start at 7:30 pm.
