The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred during a pursuit initiated by a South Carolina Bureau of Protective Services officer. The incident took place on April 14, resulting in the death of 20-year-old Dwayne Alfonso Reed Jr. The crash occurred on Longs Pond Road near Roscoe Road.
According to Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, Reed was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The pursuit began when Reed refused to stop for the officer, who had activated his blue lights and siren on I-20 near the Longs Pond Road exit. The officer had attempted to pull Reed over for speeding and reckless driving.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Reed’s vehicle was traveling at a high speed when he lost control, veered off the road, and collided with two trees. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department conducted the initial phase of the investigation at the crash site.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety requested the involvement of the sheriff’s department in investigating the crash due to the officer’s involvement. Further details regarding the incident may emerge as the investigation progresses.
