Koon’s Watch
Warmer temperatures means more people are leaving the windows down in their vehicles and more people are leaving their cars running attended to cool off before their commutes.
This equals multiple opportunities for thieves to get inside your vehicle and steal it.
The best theft prevention method is to lock up your car and take the keys with you.
Americans spend their hard-earned money on the purchase and upkeep of their vehicles. It gets them to family events, school, work, entertainment and more. What would you do if you woke up one morning and your car was missing? In 2019 alone, nearly three quarters of a million vehicles were stolen in the United States, costing vehicle owners more than $6 billion (NHTSA).
Only 56.1% of vehicles that were stolen were recovered in 2019. Don’t take your chance.
As a driver and car owner, you can take steps to keep your property safe! Here are ways you can help prevent vehicle theft:
• Park in well-lit areas.
• Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.
• Put away your valuables.
• Do not leave your keys in your vehicle.
• Do not leave the area while your vehicle is running.
In Lexington County last year, 72% of all thefts from motor vehicles were unlocked. That’s down from 85% in 2019. Thieves want a quick and easy opportunity. Don’t give it to them.
Together, we can make Lexington County a safer place to live and work.
