Riverbanks Roars into 2026 with New Lions, Free Fridays, and Exciting Seasonal Events

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is kicking off 2026 with the arrival of two young African lions, the return of Free Fridays for local residents, and a full lineup of events and experiences designed to connect guests with wildlife throughout the year.

“From meeting lion brothers Pesho and Sidai to exploring larger-than-life LEGO sculptures and going behind the scenes with sea lions, there’s something wild in store for every guest,” said Tommy Stringfellow, president and CEO of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. “2026 is all about giving our community more reasons to connect with wildlife and with one another.”

Riverbanks Welcomes Pesho and Sidai

The Zoo recently welcomed Pesho (Pesh-O) and Sidai (Seed-I), 3-year-old male African lions born at Lincoln Park Zoo. The brothers arrived December 3 as part of Riverbanks’ ongoing participation in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP), which promotes genetic diversity and healthy populations of lions in human care.

Pesho and Sidai are the grandcubs of Zuri, who passed away last year, and Thabisa, who, along with her sister Lindelani, recently transferred to Oregon’s Wildlife Safari through the SSP.

As part of the Zoo’s Bridge to the Wild expansion, construction will begin in 2026 on a state-of-the-art lion habitat. Once complete, Riverbanks plans to welcome several females to form a pride with one of the males, providing guests close-up views of the lions and opportunities to learn more about their conservation.

Free Fridays Return

Every Friday in January and February 2026, residents of Richland and Lexington counties can enjoy free daytime admission by showing proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, property tax statement, utility bill, or vehicle registration, at any ticket window.
