School District Five to Close Monday, September 30, Due to Hurricane Helene Damage

Hurricane Helene has caused significant damage throughout the School District Five community, including widespread power and internet outages, road blockages, and property damage. As many of these issues remain unresolved, all schools and offices in the district will be closed on Monday, September 30, 2024.

The district has designated February 17, 2025, as a hazardous weather makeup day and will determine closer to the date whether classes will be held in-person or virtually.

In addition to school closures, all after-school childcare programs, activities, and athletic events scheduled for Monday have been canceled. However, student feeding stations will offer bag lunches for students to pick up at Irmo High School, Dutch Fork High School, and Chapin High School between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Monday. Families should go to their zoned high school’s bus loop for pickup, and parents must provide identification and their students’ names.

District officials emphasized that the safety of students and staff is their top priority and expressed gratitude to public safety workers for their ongoing efforts to restore the community. The district will continue to assess conditions and monitor storm impacts on schools, staff, and roads.

Any further updates will be shared via the district’s communication systems, website, and social media platforms.
