The event will feature a live performance of an original score composed and performed by klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals and silent film pianist Donald Sosin.

The City Without Jews, directed by H.K. Breslauer and based on Hugo Bettauer’s controversial and best-selling 1922 novel, is a satirical yet hauntingly prophetic depiction of a society that expels its Jewish population, leading to unforeseen economic and cultural decline. Produced in 1924, the film anticipates the tragic events that would unfold in Europe in the following decades.

Alicia Svigals, the world’s leading klezmer violinist and a founder of the Grammy-winning Klezmatics, along with Donald Sosin, a renowned silent film pianist and composer, have been acclaimed for their stirring violin and piano scores for Jewish-themed silent films. Their collaboration brings a unique and emotive dimension to this cinematic experience.

This event is made possible by the Henry and Sylvia Yaschik Foundation and supported by the Sunrise Foundation for Education and the Arts.
