A Navy veteran’s final wish to spend his last days at home with family was granted, thanks to the compassionate efforts of Columbia VA Health Care System social worker Ashley Crone and the dedicated teams at Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center.
James Anselmo, a Pennsylvania native, was receiving care at Columbia’s WJB Dorn VA Medical Center when his health took a serious turn. His son, Eric Anselmo, rushed to be by his father’s side, staying at the Columbia Fisher House, which provides accommodations for families of hospitalized veterans.
“The Fisher House was a blessing,” Eric said. “It gave me a place to be close to Dad when he needed me most.”
As James’ condition worsened, his family knew how much he longed to return home. Eric approached the Columbia VA staff with his father’s heartfelt request.
“We just wanted to get Dad home. It’s where he wanted to be,” Eric said.
Ashley Crone took charge, coordinating every detail of the complex transfer. From securing a medical flight to arranging paramedic support, she ensured James would reach Pennsylvania safely and comfortably.
“It wasn’t just a transfer; it was fulfilling a veteran’s final wish,” Crone said.
James was admitted to Wilkes-Barre VA’s hospice unit, where he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones. His daughter, Mikki Anselmo, expressed deep gratitude.
“It’s hard to put into words what it means to have had those last moments together as a family,” she said. “Ashley and the VA gave us a gift we’ll never forget.”
James passed away peacefully two days after arriving home, leaving behind a legacy of service and a family forever grateful.
