Since a season-opening loss to Irmo, the Chapin High School football team has won three straight games in dominating fashion.
Led by quarterback Brady Albro’s 13 touchdowns (12 passing), the Eagles have outscored their last three opponents 128-21. In last Friday’s 27-14 win over Newberry, he completed 33-44 passes for 358 yards and three touchdowns.
Maddox Floyd had 14 receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown and Kalen Bostick had six receptions for 108 yards. Strong safety and team tackle leader Gavin Stam led the defense with 13 tackles and a sack.
The Eagles (3-1) play host to Brookland-Cayce (2-1), who look to rebound from last Friday’s 42-35 loss to A.C. Flora.
Against the Falcons, Brookland-Cayce had initial success on the ground. Quarterback Will Young rushed for two touchdowns and Deshaun Washington had a 30-yard touchdown run to give the Bearcats a 21-14 lead.
In the second half, the Falcons’ defense slowed down Brookland-Cayce’s wing-T offense. They also capitalized off two turnovers for touchdowns in scoring 28 unanswered points.
Forced to throw the football, head coach Rusty Charpia inserted Brogan Sox at quarterback.
He threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Sullivan Castles to bring the Bearcats within a touchdown and PAT.
Charpia acknowledged he may adjust the offensive to accommodate the strengths of Sox as a passer and Young as a runner. He also believes his team will be able to straighten out its mistakes prior to the start of Region 5-3A play.
“We might have to go with a different type of system where Will is in there and there are certain packages and the other quarterbacks are in there with theirs,” Charpia said. “But we’ll look at the film and see where we are, and we’ll make those decisions. That’s what we get paid to do.”
