Graduation and the departure of players to other programs left head coach Dean Howell looking to guide a young team this season.
A senior who did return helped lead the Crusaders last Friday at home to a 21-20 season-opening victory over Greenwood Christian.
Quarterback/defensive back B.J. Suits accounted for all three touchdowns for Northside Christian. Along with 147 rushing yards and 110 passing yards, he sealed the victory with a late interception.
“BJ is a special young man who happens to be really good at football,” Howell said. “He has been raised by unbelievable parents who expect the absolute best out of him spiritually, academically, and, lucky for us, athletically.
“Last year we had some good players choose to leave our school, and they were in his ear about him being better than Northside and that he needed to leave. He stayed the course and believed in our mission here.”
Howell referenced the 6-7 players who transferred to go with the 14 seniors who graduated last season. With 18 freshmen seeing their first career action, having players who lead by example like Suits and center Will Brodie as the “heart and soul” of the program is an asset for Howell.
“We’ve had a great offseason, and they are all bigger, faster, and stronger,” he said. “I look forward to seeing their continued improvement and the opportunities they have to prove themselves as better this year. If everything works to our advantage, this will be a fun group to watch.”
