District Five to participate in National School Lunch Week

To encourage more families to take advantage of the healthy choices available with school lunches, School District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties will celebrate National School Lunch Week (NSLW) during October 10-14, 2022.

The NSLW campaign theme, “Peace, Love and School Lunch” is a timely reminder of the importance of staying mellow, despite the challenges of a new school year. Learning is tough work- and kids need fuel if they’re going to learn! Since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week, this annual observance has promoted the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has both in and out of the classroom.

Despite the critical role the National School Lunch Program plays in the health and success of American youth, many people still don’t understand its importance. During the weeklong celebration students will celebrate with special menus, events, activities, and much more, all with a goal of:

· Increasing student participation;
· Spreading the message to parents that the school cafeteria is serving healthy, delicious lunch at school;
· Connecting with teachers and administrators at your school or in your district to spread the word that school meals are healthy and delicious.

Today, the National School Lunch Program serves nearly 30 million children every school day. Not only does it reduce childhood hunger, but it also supports American agriculture.

In addition to providing healthy meals for students during lunch and breakfast, School District Five students also receive a snack this year. In June, the School District Five Board of Trustees voted to use a portion of the fund balance to fund snacks for every child at every school in the district.

“I’m grateful for the snacks provided to ALL of our children in our district,” said Irmo Elementary School PTA President Katy Wiggs. “Little things like these are huge! The snack program is an example of the important partnership to meet the needs of our children and grow them as a team.”
