Having completed the girls lacrosse program’s best record in regular season history, Lexington now looks to make more history.
The Lady Wildcats (13-1) earned the top overall seed in the Class 5A Division I Lower State. This means a first-round bye and as many as two home field matches to earn a spot at W.C. Hawkins Stadium May 3 for the final.
Lexington will get the Wando/Dutch Fork winner Saturday. The opposite side of the bracket has River Bluff as the second seed and facing the Carolina Forest/Blythewood winner.
Despite entering the post-season on a seven-game win streak, head coach Tiffany Tortorello knows this is a new experience for her team.
“Obviously the potential for another 3 games this late in the season can always bring concerns,” she said. “Having the bye certainly helps with that a lot and gives us some relief. Our biggest challenge will be bringing our current momentum forward, with a few extra days before our next game. But I’m confident that the girls will continue to have high energy and are prepared to keep moving forward.”
Tortorello credits a culture which has created “calm and composure” around the team, She said the girls’ commitment to each other and overall game plan remains strong and she expects them to tap into that mindset in every playoff match.
While the girls await their first opponent, the Lexington boys played host to Carolina Forest in their playoff opener. The same night had Dutch Fork visiting River Bluff.
