Lexington’s Cam Scott now a Gamecock

By Thomas Grant Jr.

For the second time in four months, Cam Scott took part in a signing day at Lexington High School.

This time, the All-State state champion shooting guard inked his letter of intent to an in-state school. After receiving a release from the University of Texas, Scott signed with the University of South Carolina.

In five seasons with the Wildcats, Scott earned back-to-back S.C. Gatorade and South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year honors. This past season, he averaged 22 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.5 assists per game in leading Lexington to the Class 5A title and a 28-2 record.

It was the Wildcats’ first state title since 2000. Scott was also selected to the Carolinas Challenge All-Star Game and Scott had signed with Texas in November. However, he began to have second thoughts and said on social media he was “looking to stay closer to my loved ones as I pursue the next steps in my basketball career.”

After discussions with his family, Scott received his release from Texas and began discussions once again with South Carolina. Having acknowledged in the past he was close previously to signing with the Gamecocks, Scott wasted little time taking advantage of a second opportunity.

Scott becomes the second all-time scoring leader at Lexington to attend South Carolina. The Lady Wildcats’ career-scoring leader Olivia Thompson played at South Carolina from 2020-2024 and won a national title in 2022.
