Add another state title achieved in 12 years by River Bluff athletics.
On Tuesday, the Gators claimed the Class 5A Division I boys golf title at the WildeWood Club in Columbia. They defeated Dorman by three strokes at the two-day event.
Both the Gators and Cavaliers entered the second day tied at 301. Sparked by the play of runner-up Nathaniel Caughman, who ended up in a five-hole playoff with eventual champion Dorman’s Will Ruth for the individual title, River Bluff stretched its lead as many as five strokes on the final nine holes.
“It’s really good to know it’s positive that we’re on the right track and that are kids are working hard and doing the right things,” River Bluff head coach Roger Smith said. “We took the sting of not qualifying last year as motivation and some underestimation of what our kids can do this year as motivation as a little bit on our shoulder to play well coming in. We’ve had some adversity through the season and kind of fought through it and learned.
“We’ve got young people in our lineup and that’s a positive thing. They’ve learned. They’ve taken things in stride and learned from mistakes. You don’t learn from playing really well. You learn from mistakes.”
Spartanburg finished in third place followed by Blythewood and Lexington.
