This past Saturday’s Carolinas Classic in Wilmington included past and present notables of Lexington High School basketball.
Having earned a second straight Gatorade Player of the Year Award earlier last week to go with winning the Class 5A title, guard Cam Scott and fellow All-State teammate Jaxon Prunty suited up for the South Carolina team.
The Wildcat tandem was coached by a soon-to-be fellow alumnus in Dorman head coach Thomas Ryan. Since his playing days with the Wildcats, he’s established himself as one of the Palmetto State’s top coaches with five state titles won at Dorman High School.
Along with Scott and Prunty, Ryan had state champion players from Gray Collegiate (Ellis Graham and Class 2A Player of the Year Braylhan Thomas) and Ridge View (Jayden Pretty).
What South Carolina did not expect was a 3-point shooting barrage from North Carolina. Led by Weddington High School guard Grant Hamilton’s Classic record nine 3-pointers, including six in the fourth quarter, North Carolina pulled away for a 109-91 win.
Hamilton finished with 33 points as he broke the previous record of eight 3-pointers by Blythewood’s Trey Jackson.
Scott led South Carolina in scoring with 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Prunty also scored in double digits with 13 points and Graham and Thomas had 11 and 10, respectively.
Up next for Scott is the Allen Iverson All-American Classic set for May 4 in Hampton, Va.
