Thousands Celebrate Independence Day at Lake Murray

Capital City/Lake Murray Country hosted one of the Southeast’s longest-running Fourth of July traditions with the annual Lake Murray Independence Day Celebration, featuring a spectacular fireworks display over Lake Murray.

Since 1989, Capital City/Lake Murray Country has produced the annual celebration, launching synchronized fireworks from two locations—Dreher Island and Spence Island. Thousands of boaters gathered on the lake to enjoy the display, which was synchronized to patriotic music broadcast on 93.1 FM.

Those watching from land had several viewing options, including Dreher Island State Park, the Lake Murray Public Park on both the Irmo and Lexington sides of the Dreher Shoals Dam, and Pine Island. WIS-TV also provided a live stream for those unable to attend in person.

The annual fireworks celebration is funded through proceeds from Capital City/Lake Murray Country’s Taste of Lake Murray, a spring fundraising event dedicated exclusively to supporting the Independence Day fireworks display.

Those wishing to help sustain the tradition can make tax-deductible donations throughout the year by visiting the Lake Murray Country Visitors Center, 2184 North Lake Drive, or by calling 803-781-5940. Donations may also be made through the organization’s website at lakemurraycountry.com.
