Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24 is competing in a new Upstate league in American Legion baseball.

It currently stands in second behind Golden Strip Post 271 out of Simpsonville in the League VI standings. On Monday, Chapin/Newberry won its fourth straight game overall and first in league play after defeating Easley Post 52 by a 3-1 score at Newberry College.

It improved to 4-1 overall, 1-0 in the league. The lone loss came in the season-opener at the hands of Camden.

All three runs came in the second inning. Matthew Rollison was hit by a pitch to lead off, Jake Peterson singled and both scored on Brady Yarborough’s 1-out double.

Yarborough later scored on a 2-out single by Blair Moore. On the mound, Peterson allowed only a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning in five innings of work.

The relieving duo of Liam Davenport and Jacob Clark each pitched a scoreless inning to preserve the win. The two teams met again Wednesday and Thursday.

Last week, Chapin/Newberry completed a doubleheader sweep of Winnsboro Post 16. It won the first game 5-2 as Jabari Flemon went 3-4 with three RBI and Tripp Bollibon picked up the victory in relief of Wilkes Dent who had four strikeouts in three innings.

In Game Two, Bollibon had a go-ahead fielder’s choice groundout in the fourth inning of the 3-2 win.
