Gilbert Baseball, Softball Co-Share Region Titles

The Gilbert baseball and softball teams found themselves deadlocked for the Region 4-4A title.

In each case, a head-to-head tiebreaker was used to determine the top seed for the Class 4A playoffs.

It proved to be a split outcome for both programs.

The Indians finished 13-1 in the region with Airport after a 3-2 win in extra innings over Gray Collegiate Academy. Hunter Williams hit a walk off RBI single in the Bottom 8th for the win.

Since Gilbert and Airport split its two meetings, a tiebreaker based on margin of victory was used to determine the top seed. The Indians’ 4-0 win April 1 was higher than the Eagles’ 3-1 victory two nights later.

On Monday, the Lady Indians had a chance to claim the region outright with a second win over Gray Collegiate Academy. They defeated the Lady War Eagles 1-0 on April 24 to snap their 33-game region winning streak.

Meanwhile, Peyton Hendrix held Gilbert to just one hit and struck out five. The Lady Indians managed just three baserunners the entire game.

Both teams will open the playoffs May 6 at home as a first and second seed, respectively.
