Miriam Rhame Medley, a resident of Lexington, SC, was bestowed the title of “Living Legend” in recognition of her remarkable service during the Vietnam War. The ceremony, held on March 14th at the Village of Southlake, celebrated Medley’s dedication as a Red Cross Recreational Worker in Vietnam.
Joined by 100 family and friends, including SC Ambassadors Shelly Langston, Barb Kucharczyk, and Denise Scarboro, Medley was honored by The Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation. This esteemed foundation aims to honor women’s contributions to national defense and inspire future generations.
Medley’s service with the American Red Cross Clubmobile Program in Vietnam began in 1966. She provided recreational programs and activities to military personnel, bringing a “touch of home” to those stationed far from America. Her assignments took her to various locations, including An Khe and Cam Ranh Bay Air Base.
During the ceremony, tributes were paid by Sarah Masters of the American Red Cross, as well as Miguel Ortiz, Congressional Fellow of US Congressman Joe Wilson’s Office. Retired US Army Colonel Tom Fincher, who served alongside Medley in Vietnam, commended her dedication.
Medley was presented with a Resolution from the SC State Senate, sponsored by SC State Senator Katrina Shealy, and received a letter of gratitude from SC Governor Henry McMaster. Lexington Mayor Hazel Livingston, Council Member Jeannie Michaels, and Chief of Police Terrence Green also attended to honor her service.
