Nobody is coming to save you

By Radley West

A few years ago, if you had told me that one of the most freeing lessons I would ever learn was that nobody was coming to save me, I probably would have rolled my eyes.

But it’s true.

We spend a lot of time waiting. Waiting for motivation. Waiting for the perfect time. Waiting for life to settle down. Waiting for someone to tell us exactly what to do. Waiting for circumstances to improve.

The problem is that while we’re waiting, life keeps moving.

At some point, we have to decide that the person responsible for our future is staring back at us in the mirror.

Now, before you think I’m saying we should do everything alone, that’s not what I mean. We all need support. We all need encouragement. We all need people who believe in us when we’re struggling to believe in ourselves.

What I’m talking about is ownership.

When you start taking responsibility for your actions, something powerful happens. You stop giving away control of your life.

You stop blaming your schedule, your age, your genetics, your boss, your spouse, the weather, or the circumstances around you. Instead, you start asking a different question:

“What can I do today?”

Maybe it’s taking a walk instead of sitting on the couch. Maybe it’s making the doctor’s appointment you’ve been putting off. Maybe it’s putting away the phone and having a real conversation with your family. Maybe it’s finally starting the project, business, or goal you’ve been talking about for years.

The action doesn’t have to be huge. It just has to be yours.

I’ve seen this lesson play out countless times in the gym and in healthcare. The people who make lasting changes aren’t usually the ones with the perfect plan. They’re the ones who stop waiting for someone else to fix their problems.

They take ownership. They show up when they don’t feel like it. They make the next healthy choice, even after making a bad one. They understand that progress isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency.

In fact, this idea inspired me to launch a new YouTube series called GWOD—Garage Workout of the Day. The workouts are simple, effective, and filmed right in my garage with minimal equipment. Why? Because one of the biggest excuses people use is that they don’t have enough time, equipment, money, or space to exercise.

I get it. Life is busy. Trust me, I’ve used a few of those excuses myself over the years.

But the goal of GWOD isn’t to create perfect workouts. It’s to remind people that doing something is always better than doing nothing. You don’t need a fancy gym. You don’t need ideal conditions. You just need to start.

The truth is, taking responsibility can feel uncomfortable at first because it removes our favorite excuses. But it also gives us something much more valuable: power.

When you own your choices, you own your future.

You may not be able to control everything that happens to you. Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges our way. But you can control how you respond. Often, that response is what makes all the difference.

So if you’re waiting for the perfect moment, this is your reminder that it probably isn’t coming.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Take the next step.

Because when you stop waiting to be rescued, you start building the life you actually want.

And that’s where real change begins.
