This past weekend saw six Lake Murray wrestling teams begin a quest at state championships.
As of Wednesday, only the Chapin boys remained in contention.
The River Bluff girls opened at White Knoll High School by defeating South Pointe. The Lady Gators then defeated Lancaster 39-33 to advance to Tuesday’s semifinal in The Swamp against Greenwood.
River Bluff trailed early but rallied within 33-30 with two matches left. The Lady Eagles swept those matches by pinfall and technical decision for the 42-30 victory.
Greenwood will face top-ranked Rock Hill, who defeated Blythewood in Saturday’s final at Dreher High School. The Bengals reached the semifinal after defeating White Knoll 48-36 in the second round.
The boys playoffs saw Lexington, Gilbert and Chapin advance to the third round. The Wildcats edged Mauldin 37-34 in the second round last Saturday but fell 48-24 to Boiling Springs on Monday.
The Indians defeated Region 4-4A rivals Airport and Midland Valley at home Saturday. Their season ended Monday with a 57-11 loss at May River.
After a first-round bye, Chapin rolled past West Florence 73-6 to advance to the third round of the Class 5A Division II playoffs. The Eagles then edged St. James 37-36 to set up Wednesday’s Upper State final at Lugoff-Elgin.
