SC Special Olympics Spring Games Held at Irmo High

The Special Olympics South Carolina Spring Games came to Irmo High School on Tuesday, March 31, bringing athletes of all ages and abilities together for a day of competition and celebration.

The event began with a torch run escorted by the Irmo Police Department, as a runner carried the flame from the department to Irmo High School. The run was part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, which raises awareness and support for Special Olympics programs.

Officers from the Irmo Police Department were joined by members of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and the South Carolina Forestry Commission in the run.

“This was our second year to participate,” said John Hendricks. “Next year, we hope to have even more of our officers involved.”

Hosted by Lexington-Richland School District Five, the track and field competition featured athletes from across the district, including schools in the D5 and D6 areas.

The Spring Games serve as a precursor to a larger, seven-mile Law Enforcement Torch Run scheduled for May.

The races and events are designed to promote teamwork, personal achievement, and community spirit—core values of the Special Olympics movement.
