Gilbert High School welcomed back an alumnus to replace its longtime wrestling coach and introduced a new basketball coach from a county rival.

The Lexington County School District Five board approved the hiring of Josh Hoover as wrestling coach. He replaces Mitch Hudson, who during his tenure led the Indians to several region titles and state title appearances.

“When I made the decision to step back from the head coach position, it was rooted in creating a smoother transition for the future of the program,” Hudson said. “When I first approached (Athletics Director Nicole) Amick, my goal was to bring in someone who could focus on coaching wrestling and gradually grow into the full responsibilities of leading the program.

“I believe the team is now in a much stronger place than when I first got here and I wanted to ensure that the next coach wouldn’t feel overwhelmed stepping in. There are many outstanding wrestlers and a strong support system that has shaped the program’s successes. I am looking forward to continuing to be involved and helping Coach Hoover get started, and ensuring the program keeps building on its momentum.”

Amick acknowledged Hoover has “big shoes to fill”, but is coming off a successful tenure at South Aiken High School.

As Gilbert prepares to return to Class 3A this fall, it will have a new boys’ basketball coach in Will Hickson. He posted a 37-31 record in three seasons with the Panthers, making the second-round last season.

He looks to revive an Indians’ program that went 1-23 overall last season and has lost 22 straight region games dating back to last season. He’s also the program’s third head coach in four seasons.

“Coach Hickson brings with him strong leadership skills and vast knowledge for the game,” Amick said.
