Two dedicated seniors from Lexington-Richland School District Five, Mary Ellen Morrison and Bella Qian of Spring Hill High School, recently received national recognition for their impactful campaign, “Fighting Chronic Illness Together.” The duo was awarded the Len Rodger’s Spirit Award by Good Days Effective Compassion for their outstanding efforts in supporting individuals affected by chronic illness.
Through the sale of t-shirts, hoodies, and bracelets, Morrison and Qian raised over $3,100, which they donated to Good Days, a nonprofit organization that provides support to those struggling with chronic illness who face financial hardships. Beyond fundraising, the students launched a podcast and website to spread awareness about chronic illness, building a platform for education and community support.
Morrison, diagnosed with multiple chronic conditions as a freshman, including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Covid long haul, shared her motivation: “I started to realize I didn’t have to go through my life alone anymore… I wanted others in similar situations to find that same support.” Inspired by her journey, Morrison partnered with her friend Qian to create a community and provide resources for others facing similar challenges.
The students’ campaign resonated beyond their local community, drawing the attention of Good Days’ Chief Operating Officer, who invited them to receive the Len Rodger’s Spirit Award. Reflecting on the experience, Qian said, “Knowing that our work had been recognized meant that we had made a change. Honored doesn’t begin to describe how I feel about this award.”
Morrison added, “Being recognized has entirely changed my perspective. Initially, I focused on the monetary contribution, but I now realize it’s about the support and understanding we’re fostering for those with chronic illness.”
Good Days has been instrumental in helping individuals access healthcare through financial assistance, providing over $3 billion in grants since 2003. To learn more about their work, visit mygooddays.org.
