Energy Efficiency Workshop to Help Local Residents Lower Utility Costs

West Columbia, SC – Local residents struggling with high energy costs will have the opportunity to learn ways to reduce their bills at an upcoming Energy Efficiency Workshop on Thursday, February 27, at 6:00 PM at the Brookland-Lakeview Empowerment Center (BLEC) in West Columbia.

The event, hosted by the Sierra Club South Carolina Chapter in partnership with BLEC, will feature a panel of energy experts, free energy efficiency kits, and food boxes for attendees. The goal is to educate homeowners and renters on energy-saving practices while connecting them with resources to make their homes more efficient.

“We want to empower families with knowledge and tools to lower their energy bills while building community resilience,” said Dr. Cindy Richburg-Cotton, Executive Director of BLEC.

Featured Speakers:

  • Gerald Freeman, Dominion Energy Program Manager
  • Micheal Gardner, Energy Data Specialist, SC Office
  • Mitch Houk, Director of Building Resilience and Weatherization, The Sustainability Institute
  • Grant Scheffer, Founding Partner, Solar United National
  • Chenile Williams, Energy Specialist, SC Energy Office

South Carolina ranks among the least energy-efficient states in the country, with many residents facing high utility costs due to inefficient homes and appliances. The workshop is part of the Sierra Club’s Energy Efficiency for All Project, which has provided education and resources to underserved communities since 2020.

The event is free and open to the public, with sponsorship from Dominion Energy, Central Midlands Council of Government, and the South Carolina Energy Office.
