A new lawsuit bill was passed last week by Governor Henry McMaster that protects businesses from COVID-19 related lawsuits.
The new bill, COVID-19 Liability Immunity Act, provides protection to health care providers and businesses that follow public health guidance. The ceremony for the signing was held at Cafe Strudel Restaurant in West Columbia. The bill prevents lawsuits from ever making it to court. The legislation applies to all civil and administrative cases between March 2020 and December 4, 2021.
“I’m sure I speak for hundreds, maybe thousands of businesses in saying that having to defend against a baseless lawsuit not only would add stress to me and my business, but could deal a death blow to any business in the state still struggling to survive,” said Trip Turbyfill, owner of Cafe Strudel.
