Helen Wingate Bass, age 91, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at her home in Lexington. She was the daughter of Helen Owen and Robert Lee Wingate.
Helen was a graduate of Dreher High School and Columbia Hospital’s School of Nursing. She loved being an RN more than anything, other than being a mother. She was an avid bridge player and also loved to do crossword puzzles and Sudoku. She spent many years working alongside her husband at The Palmetto Candy and Tobacco Company, of which they owned for over 70 years. She was loved by friends and family and will be missed by all.
She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, James Roach Bass; two sons, James Hunter Bass (Kim) of Camden, SC and Robert Lee Bass (Terry) of Columbia, SC; grandsons, Ryan (Victoria), Cameron and Tyler; and great-grandson, Kayden.
She was predeceased by her youngest son, Thomas Chandler Bass; and 3 siblings, Robert Wingate Jr., Carolyn Hyde, and Harriet Beckham.
A visitation for Helen was held at 2 pm on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at Elmwood Funeral Home with a graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery.
