Lexington County Blowfish complete first week of season

It’s not just about college baseball at Lexington County Blowfish games.

This first full week of action provided the usual family-friendly activities for all ages. From “Dog Day Tuesday” where ticket purchasers could bring along their favorite canine for free to the weekend fireworks shows, there’s always something taking place at Lexington County Baseball Stadium to make for a fun evening.

This past Saturday brought together the sheriff’s departments of both Lexington and Richland County for a softball charity game. The six-inning contest put together by the Blowfish served to benefit USO South Carolina in its efforts to support service members and their families.

Lexington County donated $5 from ticket sales for Saturday’s doubleheader with the softball game and the exhibition game against the Catawba Valley Stars to USO South Carolina.

“The purpose is raising money and awareness for the USO and all that we do to support America’s military and military families across South Carolina,” said Katie Kennedy, the USO South Carolina’s area operations manager. “The Blowfish management team is a proud supporter of the USO and we’re so grateful to have them as well as Sheriff Jay Koon and Sheriff Leon Lott in Richland County. We couldn’t do what we do without their support.”

The outcome went in favor of Richland County by a 5-0 score in six innings. Richland County scored three runs in the Top 1st and limited Lexington County to three hits.

According to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, the bigger winner Saturday was USO Columbia and the military who will continue to benefit from its services.

SCHEDULE THIS WEEK

“We have a lot of veterans in our uniform,” he said. “We thank them for their service when they put on that military uniform, and we thank them for their service when they put on the sheriff’s department uniform.”

As for actual on-field action, the Blowfish entered Tuesday looking to snap a 2-game losing streak. They suffered back-to-back losses over the weekend to West Division leader Forest City to drop to 3-4 on the season.
