On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, the Lexington County School District One Board of Trustees approved the promotion of Erica K. Bissell, ED.D. to teaching and learning director, effective July 1, 2022. Bissell currently serves as the district’s reading and language arts coordinator.
An experienced educator with more than 18 years in education, Bissell stepped into the classroom as a K–12 reading teacher in Lee County Schools in Ft. Myers, Florida. In 2006, Bissell joined the Lexington District One family, first as an elementary school teacher, then as an elementary literacy coach. In 2008, she became the lead literacy specialist for the district.
In 2010, Bissell joined EdisonLearning to become the curriculum director for literacy, providing literacy support to partnership states in the East division. In 2011, she became the office of teacher effectiveness director for the S.C. Department of Education. Bissell moved to Lexington School District Two in 2012 as that district’s director of instruction. In 2013, she returned to Lexington District One to serve in her current role, reading and language arts coordinator.
Bissell received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from University of Florida. She also holds a Master of Education in elementary education/literacy from Florida Gulf Coast University. She has a Doctor of Education in curriculum and instruction/teacher leadership from Walden University. She is certified in early childhood and elementary education, and is a Certified 4.0 Evaluator as well as a Certified Evaluator for School Librarians. She also holds Read to Succeed literacy teacher and coach endorsements.
She is a member of the S.C. Association of School Administrators, S.C. Council of Teachers of English, S.C. Association of School Librarians, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She is also a member of the S.C. Literacy Leaders, where she has held the positions of secretary and president. She was named Administrator of the Year by the S.C. Association of School Librarians in 2020–21.
