Lexington One Educational Foundation Celebrates 30 Years of Support

November 5, 2025 — During the Lexington County School District One School Board meeting held on October 21, 2025, the Lexington One Educational Foundation was honored for 30 years of dedicated support to students, teachers, and schools across the district.

Originally envisioned in Lexington District One’s first strategic plan, the foundation held its inaugural Board of Directors meeting on September 17, 1995. Founding board members included James A. Compton, Michael S. Wingard, Michael V. Shealy, Dr. Lon Hamby, and Richard Hook, who also became the foundation’s first donor with a $1,000 contribution.

Over three decades, the Lexington One Educational Foundation has evolved into a vital nonprofit partner, providing grants and scholarships that enhance learning opportunities districtwide.

Among its many accomplishments:

  • $567,126 awarded to 735 graduating seniors in scholarships and college grants.
  • Establishment of the Lexington District One Virtual School in 2004, supported by Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America and Michelin North America.
  • More than $213,700 in Bucks for Books Grants over nine years to boost literacy skills.
  • Over $215,000 in Innovation Grants to elementary and middle schools for creative learning projects.
  • 21 years and more than $100,000 invested through Michelin Golden Apple Teacher Grants.
  • $135,000+ in STEM-focused robotics grants, thanks to donors including Michelin, the Walmart Foundation, and others.
  • More than $50,000 in Health Fund Grants to support nurses and student wellness.
  • 21 years of celebrating top graduates at the Celebration of Excellence in Education.
  • Over $2.8 million raised through the Lexington Emergency/Education Assistance Program in 22 years.

“These accomplishments reflect the passion and commitment of our board members, staff, and donors,” said Julie Anderson Washburn, the foundation’s executive director. “It’s amazing to look back at the impact that the Educational Foundation has had in supporting and shaping the district through the years. We’ve been extremely fortunate to have dedicated local leaders who care deeply about Lexington One’s students, teachers, and schools.”

The foundation continues to collaborate closely with district leadership to identify areas where financial support can make the greatest impact.
