A third state title appearance in five years is a victory away for the Lexington High School softball team.
After winning the Class 5A District One title, the Lady Wildcats opened the Upper State playoffs on May 10 with a 6-1 win over Clover.
Gracie Scott put Lexington on the board with a solo home run in the second inning. The Lady Wildcats added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and Haley Manz allowed just five hits to close out the win.
A familiar foe awaited Lexington Monday in J.F. Byrnes. The Lady Rebels took a 2-0 lead in the Top 1st inning, extended it to 4-1 in the second inning and stayed ahead through the Top 5th.
The Lady Wildcats answered with six hits and six runs in the Bottom 5th to take a 12-8 lead. Both Robyn Craig and Payton Melinauskas had two-run hits in the inning.
J.F. Byrnes managed to put the tying run on second base with two outs, but Manz recorded a groundout for the 12-11 win.
Lexington awaited on Friday the winner of the JF Byrnes/Clover matchup on Wednesday.
