Lexington wins Class 5A Division I competitive cheer title

By Thomas Grant Jr.

The past four years have seen Lexington play “hot potato” with Chapin over the Class 5A competitive cheer title.

Each team has won two titles during that span. With the creation of two divisions, the two state powers will compete moving forward in separate finals.

On Saturday at Colonial Life Arena, the Lady Wildcats and Lady Eagles both came away with first-place trophies. Lexington took first place in Division I, while Chapin won Division II for its state-record 18th title.

A week after finishing behind River Bluff, the Lady Wildcats edged out their archrival by four points. Lexington finished with a 331, followed by the Lady Gators and Blythewood (303.5 points).

This was the fifth state title and third in the past five seasons for Lexington.

In Class 4A, Gilbert finished in fifth place as Gray Collegiate Academy won its third straight title after winning back-to-back in Class 2A.

The day started with Class 3A which was won by Chesnee. Palmetto finished second, followed by Mid-Carolina which was the lone Midlands team in the competition.
