By Thomas Grant Jr.

Week 0 will get an early start at Pelion High School.

The Panthers will play their season opener Thursday at home against Williston-Elko. It marks the debut of new head coach Cory Helms, formerly of Cardinal Newman.

The next night is highlighted by two Lexington County schools renewing their rivalry before a televised audience. The Wildcats pay visit to the Indians at 7:30 p.m. as the opening game of WACH 57’s Sonic Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week.

It’s the second straight year the Columbia station has opened play with this contest. It can be seem on Channel 1250 or online at www.wach.com.

Since the series began in 2018, Lexington has won four of the six meetings.

Gilbert is coming off an 8-5 season under first-year head coach Ozzie Exume. The Indians placed second in Region 4-4A and advanced to the third round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Stewart Young

Friday marks the debut of new head coach Stewart Young. He comes over from Saluda where he led the Tigers to the Class 2A title in 2019.

As for Young’s former team, the Tigers will open the season at home against Crescent. Former offensive coordinator Greg Woerner was promoted to the top position.

White Knoll and Swansea also open play at home. After reaching the Class 5A Division II final, the Timberwolves will face Class 4A Camden, while the Tigers invite Mid-Carolina to Doug Bennett Stadium.
