Lexington-Richland School District Five is proud to celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 5. Between preparing healthy meals for America’s students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals are true heroes.
School Lunch Hero Day is held annually on the first Friday in May to honor each person responsible for providing school breakfast and lunch to students across the country. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to our students each day.
“I am appreciative of all of our student nutrition heroes,” School District Five Coordinator of Student Nutrition Shana Catoe said. ” They must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in our schools. They provide meals that give our students a higher chance of success in the classroom and contribute to our students’ overall health.”
All Student Nutrition employees in School District Five will be provided a School Lunch Hero shirt as a small token of appreciation.
School Lunch Hero Day has been celebrated annually since 2013. This year, the School Nutrition Association has partnered with Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the Lunch Lady graphic novel series, to remind everyone — directors, managers, parents, students, and school staff — that school nutrition employees are superheroes that deserve some recognition.
