School District Five Launches Junior Leadership Program to Inspire Future Leaders

CHAPIN, S.C. – The SkillsUSA Chapter at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies (The Center) has introduced a groundbreaking Junior Leadership Program in School District Five, aimed at developing leadership skills in students from fifth through eighth grade.

This innovative program is led by high school seniors who are members of SkillsUSA, bringing extensive leadership and facilitation training to younger students. The goal is to foster better communication, decision-making, and confidence while encouraging students to set personal goals and take on responsibility.

Pilot Schools

The program is currently being piloted at:
Chapin Intermediate School
Chapin Middle School
Leaphart Elementary School

Hands-On Leadership Development

Students participate in interactive activities aligned with the SkillsUSA Framework, including a bridge-building exercise where teams use limited materials to construct a bridge strong enough to hold pennies. This challenge teaches teamwork, problem-solving, and resource management, while encouraging reflection and discussion on overcoming obstacles.

A Student-Led Initiative

High school seniors Kinstyn Foster and Shea Moseley spearheaded the program, believing it offers a unique opportunity for personal and leadership growth.

“We think leadership isn’t just about being in charge—it’s about listening, learning, and helping others reach their potential.” – Foster & Moseley

The duo hopes the program will boost students’ confidence, improve communication skills, and teach resilience in the face of challenges.

Plans for Expansion

SkillsUSA Advisor Joseph Chapman shared that the program aims to expand to all middle, intermediate, and elementary schools in School District Five.

“We have already begun preparing for district-wide expansion. This will allow more interns to support student growth across multiple schools.” – Chapman

By partnering with administrators and counselors, the curriculum is tailored to each school’s needs, ensuring a flexible and impactful experience for students.
