The Scooter Scott Project’s GED (General Educational Development) program at the Brookland-Lakeview Empowerment Center (BLEC) continues to thrive, boasting an impressive track record of success in offering educational opportunities to the numerous students who have enrolled in the program.
Dr. Cindye Richburg-Cotton, BLEC Executive Director, expressed pride in hosting this life-changing initiative, emphasizing the center’s convenient location, ample space, and commitment to fostering a conducive learning environment.
Originally launched in 2011 as the Nehemiah Project GED, the program emerged from the visionary efforts of founders Rev. Kenneth Taylor of Turner Memorial AME Church and Rev. David L. Scooter Scott. Its primary goal was to aid church members in overcoming educational barriers hindering job acquisition or furthering their education. Later, the program was renamed to honor Rev. Scott’s foundational role.
As program participation surpassed the capacity at Turner Memorial AME Church, the operations relocated to Airport High School, where it thrived and expanded over the years. Generous donations and grants played a pivotal role in sustaining the program, ensuring its adherence to the founding principle of offering free education to students.
In 2014, a significant transformation occurred with the GED program transitioning to computerization while retaining individualized instruction. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a temporary hiatus in 2020, requiring students to adapt to virtual learning. Despite this challenge, GED volunteers continued to assist students with online practice tests.
Upon the return to in-person classes, students were able to take GED tests at available testing sites. Nineteen students, including eight recent graduates as of February 3, marked the program’s success. Since 2014, over 700 students have earned their GED through this initiative.
