Snoring is an issue that affects not only the person snoring but for their bed partner as well. Lack of sleep can cause more issues than just being tired the next day.
Snoring happens when air flows past relaxed tissues in the throat causing them to vibrate and produce a sound. Occasional snoring is typically viewed as harmless. Chronic and ongoing snoring can be a sign of health problems and can lead to several health complications.
Snoring happens when the airflow through the mouth and nose is partially blocked. This can be caused by several different factors. Conditions such as a cold, sinus problems, or allergies can cause a blockage in airflow. Drinking alcohol before bed can relax the upper respiratory tract and lead to snoring. Sleeping on your back can narrow the airways and contribute to snoring. Excessive weight can result in increased throat tissues which can contribute to snoring. Anatomical issues such as enlarged tonsils, a long soft palate, and a deviated septum can contribute to snoring.
There are some things you can try to help reduce snoring. Try sleeping on your side instead of your back. Limit alcohol consumption, especially before bed. Use nasal strips or decongestants to assist with keeping the airways open. Make sure you drink plenty of water to keep throat tissues hydrated.
Occasional snoring is generally not a cause of concern. If the snoring becomes chronic, it can lead to several health issues. Noticing when snoring is possibly a health concern and having an evaluation should be considered if your snoring is not easily corrected with the above recommendations.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a serious condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. This can result in daytime fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and increases the risk of accidents. OSA can increase the risk of heart disease including high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Poor sleep quality due to snoring can lead to mood swings, irritability, and depression.
If you or your bed partner notice any of the following symptoms, it may be time to see a provider that can evaluate your snoring. Concerning snoring symptoms include loud, disruptive snoring/ witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep/ excessive daytime sleepiness/ morning headaches/ and difficulty concentrating.
Snoring that is concerning to your or your significant other should be investigated so that there are no long term complications to your health.
