District Five Reading Coach receives literacy award

IRMO – Piney Woods Elementary School Reading Coach has received the Distinguished Teacher of Literacy Award by the Columbia Area Literacy Association, the local council associated with the Palmetto State Literacy Association.

Dr. Scott Johnson is involved in the Palmetto State Literacy Association as the Legislative Chairperson and the local Columbia Area Literacy Association as a member. He is responsible for monitoring and reporting on state-wide legislation dealing with literacy.

“I am honored that the Columbia Area Literacy Association chose me as this year’s Distinguished Teacher of Literacy,” Johnson said. “It reaffirms my passion for empowering readers and fostering a love of learning.”

Johnson has worked in education for 28 years and has been the Reading Coach at Piney Woods Elementary School for the past four years. During his long career, he has taught grades 1-5, undergraduate, and graduate students in a variety of classroom settings. He earned his Ph.D. in Language and Literacy from the University of South Carolina. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Columbia College.

“Dr. Scott Johnson has worked diligently to grow and support our teachers and their literacy instruction,” Piney Woods Elementary School Principal Cassy Paschal said. “Dr. Johnson embraced new standards and curriculum and created support documents to make the transition successful for our teachers. Being recognized as the Columbia Area Literacy Association Distinguished Teacher of Literacy is a well deserved honor that highlights his hard work, dedication and passion about reading. We are incredibly proud of him and are thankful he is a part of the Piney Woods family.”
