Newberry High adds more security

Additional law enforcement officers were added at Newberry High School while students returned to in-person classes last Tuesday. Four teenagers were killed by gunfire over the weekend which prompted the Newberry County School District to hold virtual classes on Monday as a precaution.

As students returned to classes two additional resource officers were added to the high school and middle school. Another officer went to Mid-Carolina Middle School.  In a statement released by the Superintendent of the school district, ‘I want to thank the local law enforcement agencies for their work and support and we will continue to work with them to make certain our schools are safe and secure,” said Newberry School Superintendent Alvin Presley.

“We have made the decision to have students return to Newberry High School to provide them with support from their school and district family,” said Newberry School District Superintendent Alvin Presley in a statement. “I want to express my personal condolences to the families of the victims during this very difficult time.”

No threats were reported by the Sheriff’s Department.

The victims in the shootings were identified by Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece as Jhisere Robinson, 15; Mykain Davis,16; Jahquindin Toland, 18; and Sonterrious Davis, 19. Davis was shot around midnight on Wise street and the other three teenagers were all found in the same neighborhood on Eleanor Street hours later.
