IRMO, S.C. – The town of Irmo is set to welcome the thrilling conclusion of the Hemmings Motor News Great Race on June 29 at Moore Park, marking the Grand Finish of the iconic 2,300-mile, cross-country rally.
Hosted by Capital City/Lake Murray Country, the event is more than just a race—it's a celebration of history, precision, community, and automotive nostalgia, with 130 vintage vehicles from around the world taking part. Drivers and navigators from the United States, Japan, England, Australia, and Canada will compete in pre-1974 classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles, including rare entries like a 1912 Haynes and a 1918 American LaFrance.
“This is a unique opportunity to showcase our beautiful region from Lake Murray to our vibrant dining and accommodations,” said Miriam Atria, President/CEO of Capital City Lake Murray Country. “We’re thrilled to host the Grand Finish of the Great Race right here in Irmo.”
The 2025 route begins in St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 21, and travels through 17 cities across the country over nine days. The race emphasizes precision navigation, with drivers following detailed daily instructions to hit secret checkpoints—earning points based on accuracy, not speed. The competitor with the lowest score wins the $50,000 grand prize.
Beyond the competition, the Great Race is a festival-like experience, bringing an entourage of nearly 500 people and drawing large crowds. “When the Great Race pulls into town, it transforms into a festival,” said Jeff Stumb, Great Race Director. “Last year, more than 250,000 spectators enjoyed the event.”
Visitors to Irmo will have a rare chance to get up close with vintage vehicles, meet the teams, and enjoy the family-friendly festivities that accompany one of the most celebrated classic car events in the world.
