Seven Oaks Elementary School MEDIA Magnet has received a $2,968.00 Arts Teacher Support (ATS) grant from the South Carolina Art Commission. The ATC grant is to support innovation in arts classrooms by helping arts teachers acquire supplies, materials, professional development, and tools/expertise.
Angela McBride and Crista Bendenbaugh wrote and collaborated on the grant. The grant allows the school to purchase classroom materials such as drums, ukuleles, and painting supplies. The supplies will be used for an interdisciplinary project, Process Art Through a Global Lens. The project requires students to compose and perform their own music. That music will be recorded and played for them as they paint expressively through movement. It is process art because the focus is on the thoughtful steps taken throughout the experience rather than the end result.
“In our arts classrooms we work towards creating, collaborating, and connecting in each lesson,” Bedenbaugh said. “The goal of the project is for students to have equitable access to materials so that they can actively collaborate with each other creating process art.”
Seven Oaks Elementary School MEDIA Magnet is a school that engages students in rigorous learning opportunities using a variety of media and technology. The school focuses on the 21st-century skills of collaboration and communication, critical thinking and problem solving, and creativity and innovation.
“We are so thankful to have Mrs. Bedenbaugh and Mrs. McBride as a part of the Seven Oaks Elementary School MEDIA Magnet team,” said Christian English, Seven Oaks Elementary Principal. “They consistently exemplify our three C’s – Create, Collaborate, and Communicate -, and this project is a wonderful extension of the work they are already doing. We are excited to celebrate the students and teachers as they work through all the steps of this project.”
